Artist's Statement

My sister’s stove drives me crazy. The knobs each have a picture next to them to indicate which burner they will turn on. The picture is nothing more than a rectangle divided into four smaller rectangles representing the four burners. Each picture has a circle in one of the four smaller rectangles; this circle has the job of describing which of the four burners will come on when the knob next to it is turned. My problem is that because the rectangle stands straight up, because it is not in perspective, I can never tell whether a circle in the top left rectangle represents the front left burner or the back left burner.

In a practical situation, such as trying to turn a burner on, this sort of incomplete or conflicting information from an image is a hindrance. Yet as much as those crazy little rectangles annoy me, their dizzying ambivalence is what I strive for in my paintings. I use visual elements (such as composition, color, texture, and sharpness of edges) to simultaneously create a landscape with space and air that you can almost walk into, and to emphasis the flatness of the surface. My goal is to create a flutter in the viewer’s eye between the three dimensional image and the flat image. The resulting painting becomes almost impossible to take in as a whole.

My latest body of work, which I refer to as my groundless landscapes, is only the most recent result of my study of perspective and its inability to be gained.
